3/14/10- Paula's Eating/ Exercise Journal: Sunday

I’ve been reading about St. John’s Wort.  The media has labeled it a “natural” anti-depressant.  Many people find it to be very effective for mild depression.  People with severe depression symptoms find more consistent relief from clinically prescribed anti depressant medications. You need to get advice from a doctor.  That is not just a disclaimer.  Really.  A doctor with experience can listen to all your symptoms and evaluate the most effective medications to suit your needs.  (My daughter’ doctor put off medicating her for ADHD for over a year. I felt confident that it was a legitimate need when we made that choice for her and not just the doctor writing a prescription for any ulterior reasons). If you do try St. Johns Wort or any other homeopathic supplement, be sure to ask your doctor how it may interact with any prescription drugs you presently take, or whether the supplement is worth the hype and/or money spent on it.  A bad interaction between prescribed and homeopathic drugs can really be dangerous.  The ‘holistic drugs’ can make prescribes medicines ineffective which can be lethal.
